Choice FM was commissioned WCFM in 2004. Originally, the call sign letters stood for Caribe FM. When the radio changed its name to Choice FM in June of 2005, the acronym was changed to stand for The people choice. WCFM broadcasts at 2000 radiated watts from its studios in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Our broadcast radius extends into the Boston metro area for approximately 100 miles from the studio, and contains almost 100,000 potential listeners. Although the exact number of listeners can never be determined. WCFM's average weekly listenership cume is between 10,000 and 80,000 listeners. Our listeners range from 15-25 for our daytime programming, and mature to 23-60 for our evening and weekend specialty shows. Listeners are diverse, usually Caribbean families, high school and college students living in Boston, Brockton, Reading, and Woburn. WCFM broadcasts 24 hrs. a day, seven days a week. Unlike most low power stations, WCFM is on the air on major holidays. The people choice is WCFM's on-air slogan and a registered trademark of the station. The station uses the slogan to describe its unique programming philosophy letting people in the community know "the station is their choice" to entertainment not usually found on the commercial radio band. WCFM strives to serve its listeners through a dynamic block program format featuring the newest Broadcast Alternative Caribbean News & Music from 7am until 9am and Specialty Shows spotlighting over fifteen musical genres from 9am until 11pm, and R&B from 11pm until 7am. Our programs consist of more Specialty Genres from our community volunteers. The WCFM Music Department reports Community Alternative, and Caribbean Music. By combining a youth-run news & dj staff with a unique computerized new satellite information system, WCFM reports on both local and world issues. WCFM is a completely Community run radio station. A Group of Community activist and businesses help to advise the Board of Directors. The Board is comprised of students, full & part-time, who sit a minimum of 20 hours per week. Positions of Station Manager, Assistant Station Manager and Program Director are elected positions who, in turn, appoint people for the remaining spots on the Board. Community volunteers comprise a sizable portion of the staff as well. They are either part-time or students who help to contribute to WCFM on many aspects including being on-air DJ's. Anybody can be a DJ at WCFM. First you must contact the Program Director to declare your interest, by either calling 617.406.7878 or by e-mailing management@choice1029.com. You will be contacted and we will set up the training program. After sitting in for about 15 hours with another DJ and completing all necessary training tasks, the DJ Test must be passed. Upon completion of all requirements, you will be licensed as a WCFM DJ and be allowed to host a Time Slot on availability or Engineer live events. If you are in a band, work for a music label, or want to contribute to WCFM's Music Vault, please contact the Music Director at 617.406.7878 or by email at music@choice1029.com. We are always looking to make new contacts and the help bring new music first. |
